Under the influence of Édouard Manet, Eva Gonzalès embraced painting en plein air (outdoors). Grandcamp, a seaside resort in Normandy, was accessible by train from Paris and Gonzalès holidayed there from 1887-1888, painting several landscapes on site. These children, having collected fish at the market, have stopped on their return to play at the edge of the grassy sand dunes. Colour is concentrated on their clothing, their hair and their basket of fish. The light palette and broad, rapid brushstrokes reveal the artist's freedom of expression.
