The National Gallery of Ireland Shop is delighted to present this scarf collaboration between Salvatore of Lucan and Megan Nolan Walsh. It consists of three designs, each of which are connected to Salvatore's commissioned portrait of footballing legend Paul McGrath. This is the Handball Claddagh scarf, a take on Megan's original Claddagh scarf design but with a football twist. In the artist's own words:

“I remember the first time I saw Megan's claddagh scarf design and how perfect I thought it was, So basically, I picked the lowest hanging fruit and decided to see if I could do a football version of it. Low hanging fruit still tastes the same like. I started sticking graph paper together and made a scale model and started drawing the “football claddagh" in black premo on tracing paper and layering on colours using acetate and posca markers. I really enjoyed the process. Initially I tried using football boots instead of hands, a football instead of a heart and a football goal and net instead of the crown but this did not work. I decided it was going to have to be hands to make it look in anyway chic so i designed a ‘handball claddagh’ realising that alternating yellow and red cards could work and would be in the spirit of Megan’s original design”
