Dramatically transformed through conservation for the Gallery's exhibition on Lavinia Fontana, this work is one of three that she painted of Judith, a young widow described in the Old Testament Apocrypha as the liberator of her hometown of Bethulia from invading Assyrians. Fontana used herself as a model to portray this allegorical tale.
