The God scarf takes inspiration from Salvatore’s portrait of Paul McGrath, unveiled at the National Gallery in 2025. In the painting, McGrath’s face is gently obscured as a gesture of respect and humility. For the scarf, Salvatore chose the word “God”, the nickname given to McGrath by Aston Villa fans, and worked in the club’s iconic claret and blue.
In the artist's own words:
“I wanted to make a sort of minimal or humble football scarf, When I painted McGrath I obscured his face, this was meant as a symbolic gesture of respecting his space and a reference to his humility and humbleness and at time his reclusiveness, I thought putting his name on it wouldn’t be the right thing and so I decided to put the humble word ‘God’ on instead. This, the nickname given to him by the adoring Aston Villa fans during his time there. And then the colours were decided for me. It was going to be an Aston Villa scarf and it would be the famous claret and blue.”
